The Space Dirt Origin Story

Hey, I’m Erik Stiebel, creator of Space Dirt.

Growing up in the South Bay, my father spent his whole career at Northrop Grumman. Like many kids, I took an interest in my dad’s work. Then, I took physics in school and quickly realized that engineering wasn’t in my future 🤷‍♂️, so I became a commercial real estate broker.

But my interest in the space industry never went away. So one of the things I did early on in my career was to make a list of all the space companies and call them. I was fortunate enough to pick up my first space client this way, a company in Torrance, CA.

Then, one day, while helping that client overcome some hurdles and find new space, I came across Payload, a newsletter about all things space. As much as I liked the newsletter, I thought I could add value to the real estate side, mainly because I live it daily and understand the intricacies of a space (and, by extension, hard tech) company’s real estate needs. And… Space Dirt was born.

Hard Tech Companies I’ve Recently Helped

An added benefit of creating this newsletter every month has been expanding my knowledge base from primarily the West Coast to a more global understanding of the industry and how it all is interconnected under the hard tech umbrella. While it may not always kill at a cocktail party, it has helped me better assist my clients in the South Bay and throughout the U.S. Plus, I genuinely enjoy discovering new and exciting voices writing about this world. And now, my father will finally acknowledge me. I kid, I kid!
